Before the lesson, prepare the Sentence Builder cards. You will need the following cards:
pronouns, verbs (for example: like, eat) and the verb ending "-s", negation cards (do not, does
not) and noun phrases (things) (for example: football, candy, ice cream, etc.).
Pass out the cards, one per pupil.
Have pupils stand in a line to create sentences. Say a sentence and have the pupils who hold the
correct cards stand at the front of the class. For example: (He) (like)(s) (football.) / (She) (does
not) (eat) (candy.)
Say a new sentence by changing either the pronoun, verb form (positive or negative), or noun
phrase at a time. Play a few times to have pupils practice building sentences, especially focusing
on combining the correct pronoun and form of the verb in a Present Simple sentence.

Course Book page 136, task 1

Have pupils look at all the new words from Unit 3. Remind the pupils that they can find the words at
the bottom of pages 100-125. Have pupils find words from the unit that fit the criteria and write
them in their notebooks.

Have pupils complete the sentences by combining one phrase from each column.

Have pupils write the sentences in the Present Simple in the correct order. Note that there are
positive sentences, negative sentences, and questions.

Writing Tip: Remind pupils that sentences should begin with a capital letter and end with a period or
question mark.
•
Have pupils match the sentences to the correct picture.

Use the sentence pyramid to practice reading for fluency. Have pupils read the lines of the sentence
pyramid aloud until they say a full sentence. Have pupils practice pronouncing the words in the
sentence accurately and assess them for fluency skills. Repeat the reading practice twice.

Have pupils work with a partner. Have pupils take turns choosing a character from the picture and
having their partner guess who they are thinking of. Have one partner ask, for example: "Does he
have a guitar?" and the other partner answer: "Yes, he does. / No, he does not." Have the partner
continue to ask questions until they can guess the character correctly.

Demonstrate the dialogue with the class before having pupils complete the task with their partner.
Remind pupils to use have/has, the Present Simple question form (on page 126) and the words from
the unit to help them.
Course Book page 137, task 6
•
Have pupils write four sentences in the Present Simple describing things they do every day in their
notebooks. Have pupils write two positive sentences and two negative sentences.
