MAGICAL Teacher's Guide - Book - Page 159
Vocabulary
New
•
Teach the new vocabulary using the word cards: band, famous, guitar, hear, lesson, play, practice,
sing, singer.
▪
▪
▪
▪
▪
•
Ask pupils what these words have in common. Elicit (in L1 if needed): music
Ask different pupils: Do you like to listen to music? Do you like to play music?
For each word, ask pupils to say if the word is a verb (action word), noun (person, place, or thing),
or adjective (describing word).
Point out to pupils that the word "play" in English has two meanings. Give sentences to illustrate
the two meanings: I play football. I play the guitar.
Have pupils point to and read each new word in their Course Books on pages 106/107.
Word Workout (suffix -er): Tell pupils that "-er" at the end of a verb can sometimes change the
meaning to "a person who does the action." Write the words on the board to give the examples:
sing/singer, play/player. Elicit from pupils any other words that follow this pattern.
Ready to Read with Words I Know – New Phonics Pattern
•
Tell pupils that the letters "-er" at the end of a word makes the sound /er/ in English, as in the words:
singer, center.
▪
•
Ask pupils which of these words is a new word they have just learned. Elicit: singer
Elicit other words pupils know with this pattern.
Vocab Activity
•
Do the activity to review and practice the vocabulary (show the word cards): artist, band, famous,
guitar, hear, lesson, music, play, practice, radio, sing, singer.
•
The Longest Sentence (VA #19)
▪
▪
Have pupils work in small groups/pairs to write a sentence that uses as many new or review
words as they can (logically). Give an example to demonstrate: The singer in the famous band
hears music on the radio.
When they are finished, have groups/pairs share their sentence with the class. The group with
the sentence that uses the most reviewed/new words wins.
Course Book pages 106-107
Course Book page 106, task 1
•
Tell pupils that all the sentences in this task are false.
•
Read each sentence together as a class and determine why it is incorrect. Elicit a corrected version of
each sentence using a word from the word box to replace the incorrect word (in bold).
For example: A band plays games together. (Elicit: A band plays music together.)
•
Extension: Have more advanced pupils write at least 3 of their own sentences using the bolded
words.
