Focus on Form
Course Book page 102
•
Before teaching the grammar form, ask pupils to look at the first sentence in the Course Book: I am in
the music store.
▪
▪
▪
▪
•
Introduce prepositions.
▪
•
Ask pupils to identify the subjects in the sentences.
Ask pupils to identify the verb in the sentences (and review the forms of the verb to be).
Ask pupils to identify which part of each sentence describes "where" (Elicit: in the music store)
Tell pupils that they will learn that "in" is a preposition and "in the music store" is a prepositional
phrase (Use L1 if needed).
Explain that prepositional phrases are used to describe where something is. Tell pupils that in
order to form a prepositional phrase in English, we use a preposition and a place (noun phrase).
Give the example phrases and have pupils identify the preposition in each phrase:
in the music store, above the mountains, between the cinema and the theater.
Tell pupils that in order to form a sentence using a prepositional phrase, we use a subject (who or
what), a verb (an action word or the verb to be), and a prepositional phrase. Give the example
sentences and have pupils point to the corresponding image in the Course Book:
I am in the music store.
The balloons fly above the mountains.
The museum is between the cinema and the theater.
Grammar Activity

Do the activity to practice the form: prepositions
•
Sentence Builder (VA #22)
▪
▪
▪
▪
Before the lesson, prepare the Sentence Builder cards. You will need the following cards:
pronouns, to be verbs, prepositions (for example: on, in, near, in front of, etc.), and noun phrases
(places) (for example: the cinema, the theater, the museum, etc.).
Pass out the cards, one per pupil.
Have pupils stand in a line to create sentences. Say a sentence and have the pupils who hold the
correct cards stand at the front of the class. For example: (She) (is) (near) (the cinema).
Say new sentences by changing either the pronoun, verb, or prepositional phrase at a time. Play a
few times to have pupils practice building sentences, especially focusing on creating the correct
word order for sentences using prepositional phrases.
