Focus on Form
Course Book page 62
•
Before teaching the grammar form, ask pupils to look at the sentences in the Course Book.
▪
▪
▪
•
Ask pupils to identify which words in the sentences describes "who." (Elicit the pronouns) Remind
pupils that these words are the subjects of the sentences. Use this opportunity to review the
singular and plural pronouns.
Ask pupils to identify which word (besides the subject) in the sentences is not the same. (Elicit:
am, is, are)
Tell pupils that they will learn how to use these words in a sentence (Use L1 if needed).
Introduce the verb to be (positive).
▪
▪
Explain the verb9s meaning by translating the sentences into L1: I am hungry. / I was hungry. Ask
pupils to compare the verb to be with their own language. How are they the same or different?
Use L1 if needed. Point out to pupils that in English, the verb to be has a form in the present
tense (am) as well as in the past (was – יêהיי/) كنت.
Show pupils that the verb to be has three forms – am, is, are – and that each form pairs with
different pronouns.
•
Give example sentences for each pronoun and form of to be: I am strong. You are strong. He is
strong., etc.
•
Tell pupils that in these examples the to be verb is combined with an adjective. The verb can also be
combined with a noun, as in: She is a doctor. or with a prepositional phrase: He is in the house.
•
Extension: Expose more advanced pupils to the short forms of the verb to be. Explain that some
words in English can be combined to one.
▪
Write I am on the board, cross out the letter a, and replace it with an apostrophe to write I'm.
Repeat for each of the short forms using the same example sentence as above: I'm strong. You're
strong, etc.
