Teach the new vocabulary words from New Words (contest, cross the street, follow, hair,
look like, number, sign, spy, woman). Reinforce these new words via at least one or two
activities.

Have the students read the title of this part. Have them discuss the possibilities with a
partner.
Ask:
• Who do you think the children follow?
Have the students guess and write their predictions in their notebooks.
While Reading
2. Let’s Read!
Have the students look at the pictures in the text.
Ask:

• Looking at the pictures, what do you think happens in this
part of the story?
• Where do you think the children are?

Have the students read frames 3 and 4 and ask:
• What do the children see at Pine Lake? (a sign)
• What does the sign say? (Harriet the Spy contest today at 4 o’clock.)
