The Verb ‘to be’
This grammar topic is the use of the verb ‘to be’ in the Present
Simple form. Since this tense of the verb doesn’t exist in
Hebrew or in Arabic (or in many other languages), it’s
important to stress the point and how important it is in English.
One way of making the meaning of the verb a little clearer is to
explain it by going into the past and saying:
•
AL: Students know how
word order, sound and
writing systems in English
are organized and how
these elements compare
with their home language.
Yesterday, I was at home. Today, I am at school.
Translate the first sentence and have the students point out the verb was – / .
Then say, in Hebrew or Arabic we can’t say this sentence without the verb was. In English
it’s the same.
But in English, we also have to have the verb was but in the present, when we talk about
things that are in the present.
Read the examples with the students. Stress each verb form and highlight it by writing it on
the board.
Have the students read the sentences after you and explain what they understand from the
sentences.
You say a pronoun, they have to give you the correct form of the verb.
WKBK: Have the students turn to workbook pages 8-10 and do exercises 1-5.
