I. Rationale
Let’s Find Out is a story-based EFL program for students at Foundation Level Stage 2. The
program teaches English to Israeli students through integration of the four domains in
accordance with the Revised National English Curriculum: Social Interaction, Access to
Information, Presentation and Appreciation of Language and Literature. Each unit guides the
students to work towards reaching the benchmarks set out by the National Curriculum, thus
ensuring the students are acquiring English via communicative and meaningful tasks at the
appropriate level.
The program consists of five thematic units (see Storyline). Each of its units presents a
question to be answered, or a mystery to be solved. The recurring characters in Let’s Find Out
– and the students in the classroom – use a wide variety of text types, visuals and clues to
solve these mysteries and to find the answers to the questions. This process takes students
from applying lower order thinking skills (LOTS) to using higher order thinking skills (HOTS),
while engaging them in meaningful language use.
Let’s Find Out is designed to suit a heterogeneous class, catering to students at different levels
and with different learning styles. The information the students are exposed to is presented in
writing, via visuals, aurally as well as online, thus ensuring everyone can relate to the
information in one format or another easily.
Each unit in Let’s Find Out includes a theme-related literature section, exposing the students
to children’s literature and enriching their knowledge and their language. Likewise, the units
include a variety of tasks that allow the students to apply the language they are learning in a
meaningful and enjoyable manner that will lead to natural acquisition of the language.
II. The Characters
There are several characters in the program. However, the lead character is Albert Sparkov, a
12-year-old inventor who lives in a castle outside the fictional town of Pine Lake. There are
five supporting characters who also appear throughout the book: Dexter (Albert’s butler),
Carla (Albert’s cousin), Anna and Zack (a brother and sister who live in Pine Lake) and Holly
(the town librarian). These characters have adventures and the students take part in these
adventures via the stories and the activities in each unit.
III. The Storyline
Unit 1 – All About Me!
Theme: Identity
The story in Unit 1 guides readers to find the answers to questions about Albert – his name,
what time it is in the story, where he lives, what he likes and finally, where he is right now.
