If you have Internet access, send the students to find out more on the website. If not, use
the following to expand the discussion on Lucy Hawking and remind them that they read the
Independent Reading task on Stephen Hawking.
Lucy Hawking
Lucy Hawking is an author and the original creator of the George Greenby books, a series of
adventure stories which aim to explain complex science to a young audience through
dramatic storytelling. Lucy works with a lot of important scientists on the George Greenby
series, including her very well-known father, Stephen Hawking. Lucy was made a fellow of
the Royal Astronomical Society in recognition of the work she has done in explaining science
to a young audience. If you’d like to find more information to share with your class you can

While Reading
2. Let’s Read!
Have the students look at the title of the book and the chapter. Ask if they know what the
Big Bang is (if not, explain VERY simply the scientific theory that created the Earth – there
was an explosion of gasses that formed the planet and life developed due to the presence of
specific gasses. Because of the explosion it’s called ‘the big bang’).
Ask who the authors of the story are. (Lucy and Stephen Hawking)

Have the students read the story quietly.
Then read it to them or with them and ask:
• Whose door is open? (Annie’s)
• Who sees it? (George)
• What does he do? (he walks in)
• What is the house like? (dark, cold and quiet)
• What does George see under Eric’s door? (a blue light)
• Is Eric in his room? (no)
• What does George hear coming from Eric’s room? (Cosmos the computer going
‘beep beep’)
• Is anyone home? (no)
• Why do you think George goes into Eric’s room? (have the students guess or explain
with logical explanations)
• What does he see when he walks into Eric’s room? (a blue light coming from
Cosmos’ computer)
• What is this light doing? (it’s making a big door in the middle of the room)
• What do we know about the door? (it’s open)
• What does George see outside the door? (the Moon)
