Marie Curie and the Nobel Prize
Marie Curie was born in Poland in 1867. Her father was a physics and math teacher. Women
were not allowed to study at university in Poland, so she went to the Sorbonne in Paris. Like
her father Marie studied math and physics. She was the first woman to win a Nobel Prize
and the only woman to win the prize in two different fields (in physics in 1903 and in
chemistry in 1911). Marie’s husband Pierre was also a scientist, he shared the Nobel Prize
with Marie in 1903. Their daughter Irene followed in Marie’s footsteps, winning the Nobel
Prize in Chemistry in 1935.
