The Modals Can / Can’t
Have the students look at the box on page 154. Have them read
the dialogue and explain what is happening in the short dialogue.
They should understand that the people in the short comic strip
were expressing ability to do something or inability to do
something.

Ask them what word they noticed in both dialogues – CAN.
Read the examples with them and the explanation. Check to see that everyone understood
and can give you an example about themselves.
Explain that after the word ‘can’ we DO NOT add ‘to’. We say: Subject + can + VERB (v1). For
example: I can read. We can make dinner.

Have the students choose either ‘’can or ‘can’t’ for each situation. Have them write the
answers in their notebooks. Encourage them to write the entire sentence.
