6. Language Focus!
Present Progressive – Questions and Answers
Remind the students of the tense they learned a few lessons ago
- Present Progressive, Positive. Give them an example or two and
ask them to give you a few examples. For example: I am watching
a movie. I am eating candy. I am not eating an apple., etc.
AL: Students know how
word order, sound and
writing systems in English
are organized and how
these elements compare
with their home language.
Have them look at the picture and ask them what they think is
happening. Ask them to read the speech bubbles. Explain that the
woman is asking a question and in the Present Progressive we ask questions in this manner.
Ask them what they notice.
Have them look at the chart and say what they see. They should notice that the helping verb
‘be’ moves to the front of the sentence and the rest moves over, making it:
To Be + Subject + Verb+ing + object?
Have the students read the sentences in the chart and notice the answer form. Explain that
we can answer using a complete sentence or using the short form and they are both correct.
Explain the short form. Show the students that short form answers have only the helping
verbs as in ‘Yes, it is.’ or ‘No, it isn’t.’ Explain that the short answer is a complete answer and
we don’t always have to repeat the entire question in our answers. So if we ask:
Are you making a sandwich? You can answer: Yes, I am making a sandwich. Or: Yes, I am.
Both are correct.
