LFO Teacher's Guide - Book - Page 138
For example: I am not playing in the park.
Subject + To Be + NOT + Verb+ing + object.
Have the students make up sentences orally, using the chart.
Short Form: Here too remind the students of how to make the short form with the word
‘not’. Explain again that we merge the verb and ‘not’ to make one word, and we omit the ‘o’
in ‘not’ and replace it with an apostrophe. Do a few examples on the board – you aren’t, she
isn’t, they aren’t, etc.
Explain that we can’t say ‘amn’t’ as it doesn’t exist. We have two short forms for all the
subjects, but not for ‘I’. With ‘I’ we can only say ‘I’m not’. But with the others we can
choose, for example, ‘he’s not’ / ‘he isn’t’.
8. Let’s Practice!
. Have the students choose the correct helping verb to complete the sentences. They

4. It is not playing in the park.

positive sentences and three negative sentences in their notebooks about the picture using
the chart.
CHALLENGING OPTION: Have the students write the sentences using the short form as well.
