Teach the new vocabulary words from New Words (believe, camera, catch, funny, happen,
it’s time for…, nobody, of course, photograph, story, strange, surprise, take a photograph
(photo), then). Reinforce these new words via at least one or two activities.

HOTS: PREDICT AND MAKE CONNECTIONS
Section Title – Turn the students’ attention to the heading of the section. Ask them to try to
guess what the title might be referring to based on everything they’ve read so far. Remind
them of their answers at the end of the section to see how many of the students were
correct.

Announcer: This is Radio 99 FM. It’s ten o’clock, and now it’s time for Talking about Movies,
with Sam Smith.
Sam: Hi, I am Sam Smith, and this is Talking About Movies! I want to tell you about a movie
at Pine Lake Cinema. It’s a movie that everybody loves. The name of the movie is The
Legend of the Lake Monster. The director of this movie is Orson Walls.
This movie happens in New York City. There is a big lake in New York City. There are ducks
and frogs and fish in the lake. There is also a legend that a monster lives in the lake, but
nobody really believes the legend.
Alex Jones is a boy who lives in New York City. One day, Alex goes fishing. He catches a very
big fish. Then Alex sees something strange in the water. It isn’t a fish or a duck or a frog. It is
a monster! This monster is very big and very scary, and it takes Alex’s fish!
