7) A variation on this game is instead of simply remembering the words, the students
make a sentence or two out of the words on the board to help them remember them.
For example, if you wanted to review the words 'answer', 'father', 'mother', 'know' and
'name', they could make up a sentence such as: Do I know my mother’s and my
father’s names? The answer is YES! This will help them remember the words. Start
with five words and slowly build up to more words during the year. The students
should be encouraged to share their stories with their classmates.
8) Play Secret Word. Review the words from the Words I Know and teach the New Words.
Tell them that one of the words is the “Secret Word of the Day”. You can either write
the word in your notebook or reserve a special corner for it on the board, hiding it so
it’s not visible but easily accessed when needed. The first student to use the Secret
Word in an answer to a question (NOT by asking a question or by reading out loud)
during the lesson wins! The prize could be positive reinforcement by way of a sticker or
a stamp.
9) Have the students work in pairs to review and assess each other. They take turns
asking each other to match words and translations. They should complete the list of
words twice; first from English to L1 and then from L1 to English. Each student should
complete the Glossary entry for each word in his/her Workbook, and rank how well
he/she knows the word.
10) Choose a word from the Vocabulary Ruler: say the word. Ask students to locate the
word in the text by pointing to it with their finger. They should raise their (other) hand
when they’ve found the word. Choose a student to read the sentence in which the
word appears.
11) Do word webs with the students. Draw three word webs with a vocabulary item in the
center of each. Have the students think of which words they know that they can add to
the webs. Have them come up to the board and write the word of their choosing to the
correct web. Ask the student to explain the connection. Once the webs are complete,
have the students write sentences for each web, using as many of the words as
possible.
12) Play Charades: Write up the words that you want to review on small cards or pieces of
paper and put them in a basket / bowl / bag. Divide the class into two so there are two
teams. Each team, in turn, sends a representative to the front of the class. That student
chooses a word and has to act it out, silently. The teams have to guess what he or she
is acting out. Each correct answer gives the team a point. The team with the most
points wins.
