His – Albert has a dog. This is his dog.
Her – Anna has a book. This is her book.
Its – The dog has a guitar. This is its guitar.
Point out that the word ‘its’ looks very much like the short form of ‘it is’, but there is no
apostrophe, so they should try not to confuse the two.
• Our – We have a parrot. This is our parrot.
• Your – You have a friend. This is your friend.
• Their – They have a sandwich. This is their sandwich.
Explain the meaning of each possessive adjective and how it’s used. Have the students make
up sentences in their notebooks using the substitution table. Have them share their ideas.
