Say: With a friend, look and find things that have the sounds /th/ or /TH/.
Circle and tell your friend what you see.

Give pupils a few minutes to do this with a partner. Have pupils find as many
words as they can that have the sounds /th/ or /TH/.

Now, as a class, review the words the pupils found. )Elicit, for example:

Ask: What do you think is happening in the picture? (Elicit any logical response.)

Before listening, point to the title and read together with the pupils: Happy Birthday, Ruth

Refer to pupils' predictions regarding the image in task #4 to check if they were correct based on
the new information in the title of the text.
Say: Let's listen and find out who is at the birthday party.

Tell pupils to listen and follow along with their finger.
▪
Teach the new vocabulary words “party,” "bring," and “we” through the context of the text (use
L1 if needed to explain the meaning).
After listening, ask: Who is at the birthday party? (Elicit: Ruth, Ruth's Mother, Father, brother (Seth),
Grandmother, and Grandfather)

What did the family bring to the birthday party? (Elicit: gifts and birthday cake)
▪
How old is Ruth? (Elicit: She is thirteen years old.)
Now say: Listen again and circle all the words in the text that have the /th/ or /TH/ sound.

Give pupils a few minutes to do this on their own or with a partner. Have pupils scan the text for
/th/ and /TH/ words.

Reveal to check answers and practice the vocabulary. Elicit the words: Ruth, birthday, this,
thirteen, the, three, mother, father, brother, Seth, there, grandmother, grandfather, them, then,
thank you.

Have pupils sing the song to Ruth.
