Say: Open your Course Books to page 50. Look at #1.

Point and ask: What letters do you see? (Elicit: the letters T and H.)

What sounds do the letters T and H make together? (Elicit: /th/ and /TH/)

Say: Write the letters TH to complete each word.
•
Then say: Let's read.
▪
Read the words together emphasizing the /th/ sound, then ask the pupils to read the words aloud
without your help: thank you, birthday.
▪
Repeat to read the words with /TH/: father, grandmother.
•
Say: Look at #2.
•
Say: All the words have the sound /th/ or /TH/. Say the words and mark ✓ where you hear the
sound – in the beginning, middle, or end of the word.

The first one is done for the pupils. Point to #1 and say: mouth. Ask:

Do you hear /th/ in the beginning of the word? (Elicit: no)
▪
Do you hear /th/ in the middle of the word? (Elicit: no)
▪
Do you hear /th/ at the end of the word? (Elicit: yes)
▪
Show pupils the check mark in the third box (end of the word).

Give pupils a few minutes to complete the task with a partner.
•
Ask to check answers: Which word begins with the sound /th/? (Elicit: three)
▪
Which words have the sound /TH/ in the middle? (Elicit: mother, grandfather)
▪
Which word ends with the sound /th/? (Elicit: mouth, teeth)
•
Say: Look at #3.
•
Say: Listen and circle the word you hear.

NOTE
•
Weaker pupils should be encouraged to underline the letters that make the target sounds /th/ and
/TH/ with a colored crayon – if it is in the beginning underline in green, in the middle in yellow, or at
the end in red.
