Say: Open your Course Books to page 34. Look at #1.

Point and ask: What letters do you see? (Elicit: the letters C and H.)

What sound do the letters C and H make together? (Elicit: /ch/)

Say: Write the letters CH to complete each word.

Then say: Let's read.

Read the words together emphasizing the /ch/ sound, then ask the pupils to
read the words aloud without your help: chips, kitchen, spinach.
Ask: Do you hear the sound /ch/ in the beginning, middle, or end of the word ‘chips’? (Elicit: in the
beginning)

Repeat for ‘kitchen’ and ‘spinach.’

Say: Look at #2.
•
Say: All the words have the sound /ch/. Say the words and mark ✓ where you hear the sound – in
the beginning, middle, or end of the word.

The first one is done for the pupils. Point to #1 and say: sandwich. Ask:

Do you hear /ch/ in the beginning of the word? (Elicit: no)
▪
Do you hear /ch/ in the middle of the word? (Elicit: no)
▪
Do you hear /ch/ at the end of the word? (Elicit: yes)
▪
Show pupils the check mark in the third box (end of the word).
Point and say together with the pupils:
1 sandwich

3 cheese
4 chair
Ask: Which words begin with the sound /ch/? (Elicit: chocolate, cheese, chair)

Which word has the sound /ch/ in the middle? (Elicit: teacher)
▪
Which word ends with the sound /ch/? (Elicit: sandwich)

Say: Look at #3.
•
Say: Listen and circle the word you hear.

Weaker pupils should be encouraged to underline the letters that make the target sound /ch/ with a
colored crayon – if it is in the beginning underline in green, in the middle in yellow, or at the end in
red.
