Mr. Red and Mr. Green
Page 68
Two men live in the traffic light.
Their names are Mr. Red and Mr. Green.
When people see Mr. Red, they stop and wait.
When people see Mr. Green, they cross the street.

Mr. Red sings a song every day. Mr. Green sings a song, too.
“Mr. Red is the color of stop, don’t go! It isn’t safe to cross, you know.”
“Mr. Green says it’s time to move your feet. Look left and right, then cross the
street!”

Mr. Green thinks he is more important than Mr. Red.
“I show people when they can cross the street. I am more important!”
But Mr. Red thinks he is more important than Mr. Green.
“When there are cars, it isn’t safe to cross the street.
I show people when they need to stop and wait. I am more important!”

Mr. Green is very mad. “Goodbye, Mr. Red!”
He jumps out of the traffic light and flies away.

Tom is getting ready for school.
Tom usually goes to school by bus, but he wants to walk to school this week.
Tom asks his mother and father if they can walk with him to school.
“Yes, we can walk to school with you this week!”
“I can walk with you this morning. Let’s go!”

Tom and his father walk to the traffic light.
They see Mr. Red, so they stop and wait.
And wait. And wait.
They wait for a long time, but the light is still red.
Tom starts to cry. “I don’t want to be late for school!”
“Oh no! I need to call Mr. Green.”

Mr. Green is in Green-Land.
He sits under a green tree near green flowers.
He drinks green juice, eats green fruit, and reads his green book.
Then, his green phone rings. “Hello?”
“Mr. Green, please come back! People can’t cross the street without you.
Tom and his dad are here. Tom is very sad. He doesn’t want to be late for school!”
“I’m coming!”

Mr. Green flies back to the traffic light.
The light turns green.
Tom smiles. He takes his father’s hand.
They cross the street and get to school on time!
