Say: Open your Course Books to page 12. Look at #1.
•
Point to the letters on the left side and ask: What letters do you see? (Elicit: the
letters A, E, I, O, U)

Point to the letters one at a time and say together with the pupils: The letter
is A and the sound is /a/.
▪
What words do you know that begin with the letter A?
▪
Repeat for each letter.
▪
Remind pupils that these 5 special letters are called "vowels" and that every word in English has
at least one of them (use L1 if needed).

Say: Let's read the words in each row. Listen to the sound in the middle of the words. Circle the
word that does not have the same sound.
•
Ask different pupils to read the words in each row. Help pupils who struggle by sounding out each
letter before putting the sounds together.

After each row is read, ask: Which word does not have the same sound?
Phonemic Awareness
•
Say: Open your Course Books to page 12. Look at #2.
•
Review the words before doing the activity: banana, quiet, hand, monkey, television, end, family, sad.
•
Say: Look at #1. What is this? (Elicit: This is a banana.)
•

Ask: How many parts does the word 'banana' have? (Elicit: 3)
▪
Say and clap to count the syllables: /ba/ /na/ /na/ 'banana'
▪
Have the pupils say the syllables and count with you.
Say: Let's read the words and count the number of parts in the words. Show me how many you
hear by holding up 1, 2, 3, or 4 fingers.
▪
Say the words together with the pupils and clap to count the syllables:
1 banana 2 quiet 3 hand 4 monkey 5 television 6 end 7 family 8 sad
