LEGENDARY Teacher's Guide - Book - Page 329
•
Say: Let's write the wh-question words.
▪
•
Have pupils copy the words from the new words box to complete the questions. Decide together
which word fits the questions.
Now say: Let's draw a line to match the questions to the answers.
▪
Explain to pupils that each wh-question word elicits a different type of answer. Most often,
"what" = things, "when" = time or date, "where" = place, "who" = person, "why" = answer with
"because".
▪
Teach the new word “because" through the context of the question/answer pair (use L1 if
needed to explain the meaning).
•
Reveal to check answers.
•
Say: Open your Course Books to page 267. Look at #3.
•
Before reading, ask if the pupils recognize what type of text this is.
•
•
•
•
▪
Tell pupils that this text type is a letter (use L1 if needed). Ask pupils about
their experiences with letters – have they ever sent or received one? Who
to/from?
▪
Elicit from the pupils what type of information must be in a letter, for
example, the date the letter was written, an addressee using the phrase
"Dear ___," and the name of the writer using the phrase "From, ___". Letter
are sent in the mail so they must also be accompanied by an envelope with the address written
on it. Point to these elements in the text as you discuss them.
▪
Ask: What is the same and different between a letter and an e-mail? (Elicit some similarities,
such as beginning with "Dear ___", and some differences, such as e-mails have a subject line.)
Ask: Who is the letter to? (Elicit: the family) Who is the letter from? (Alex)
▪
Say: Look at the photograph. What do you think Alex is writing a letter to his family about?
(Elicit any logical response.)
▪
Remind pupils that another way to say "photograph" is "photo."
Say: Let's read the letter and find out what Alex wants to tell his family.
▪
Read the text together as a class. Have pupils point to follow along in their Course Books.
▪
Teach the new word “holiday" through the context of the text (use L1 if needed to explain the
meaning).
After reading, ask: Where is Alex? (Elicit: Alex is in Thailand.)
▪
Who is in the photo? (Elicit: Alex and his new friends.)
▪
What is Alex doing in the photo? (Elicit: They are playing in the water.)
▪
Why? (Elicit: Because it is the New Year holiday water party.)
Now, read the questions below the text have pupils circle the answer in the text in the correct color.
▪
Give pupils a few minutes to do this on their own or with a partner.
▪
When pupils are finished, ask volunteers to come to the board and circle the information in the
text to check answers.
