some food pupils know, and help pupils name the foods in English)
▪
Ask: Do you know what country the foods come from? (Elicit some responses based on the
pupils’ general knowledge. Help pupils recognize the flags as countries where the dishes
originate)
▪
Teach the new lexical chunk “come from” context of the question (use L1 if needed to explain the
meaning).
▪

Say: Soo and her brother Alex are at the World Market. They eat food that comes from countries
around the world. Let’s listen and mark the foods that Soo and Alex eat at the market.
Alex: We are at the World Market. Look, there is food from countries around the world. Soo, do
you want to eat some new foods?
Soo: Yes, Alex! I am hungry. Let’s eat food from England.
Alex: In England, people eat fish and chips. Mmm! I like it! Do you like the fish and chips, Soo?
Soo: Yes, I do! Let’s eat more new foods. Here is food from the USA. They like to eat hamburgers
and drink cola. Yum, hamburgers are my favorite! Do you want a hamburger and cola, Alex?
Alex: No, thank you. I don’t want a hamburger. I want to eat sushi from Japan!
Soo: Here is the sushi place. And look to the right! There is food from Thailand, too. Yum, the pad
thai is so good. I want to eat it again for dinner.
Alex: OK, we can make it at home. Visiting the World Market makes me want to travel around the
world!
Soo: Me too!
•
After listening, ask: What foods did Soo and Alex eat at the World Market? (Elicit: fish and chips,
sushi, pad thai, and hamburger and cola)
▪
•
Ask different pupils: What foods from around the world do you like? What foods do you not like?
▪
•
What food did Soo and Alex not eat at the World Market? (Elicit: pizza and bread and cheese.)
Allow different pupils a chance to give a personal response to the questions/discuss as a class.
Challenge a strong class to answer challenge questions. Ask:
▪
What country does fish and chips come from? (Elicit: England/UK)
▪
What food at the market is from Japan? (Elicit: sushi)
▪
Repeat for different countries/food.
