How do you think the giant feels? (Elicit any logical answer: I think the giant feels…)

Say: Let’s read the story and find out what happens to the giant.

Challenge a strong class to do a pre-reading challenge task. Say: Open your Legendary Stories &
More book to the Look and Find task on page 94.

Give pupils some time to explore the story The Selfish Giant with a partner or small group by scanning
it in their Stories & More book from page 95 to page 109.

Pupils can answer the questions orally with their partner/group or record their responses in their
English Notebooks.
Review the task together with the class and ask pupils to show you on which pages in the story they
found the answers.
First Reading

Read the story The Selfish Giant all the way through (or play the audio file).

Pupils should follow along with the story in their Stories & More book.

After reading, ask questions related to the story.
•
Ask: What makes the giant selfish? (Elicit, for example: The giant does not like to share his garden
with the children in town.

Say: Look at the last page of the story (Stories & More page 109). Ask:

Is the giant selfish at the end of the story? (Elicit: No, the giant is not selfish. He is nice.)

Say: Open your Course Books to page 222. Were we correct about what happened in the story?

Second Reading and Story Script: The Selfish Giant

Read the story again, page by page. While reading, stop at each page and ask questions to ensure
pupils comprehend and to elicit vocabulary that the pupils have learned.
