Ask: What sound do you hear in all the words? (Elicit: /s/)

Say: The letter C can make two sounds – /k/ or /s/.

Point out that the letter C makes the soft sound /s/ in these words.
Show that the letter C makes the soft sound /s/ if it is followed by the vowels E or I. Circle or
underline each soft C /s/ in the words, and point out the E or I that follows. Say the words again
and emphasize the sound.
Ask: Do you remember what other letters makes more than one sound? (Elicit: G - /g/ or /j/ and
Y - /y/, /E/, and /I/)

Remind pupils that the soft C follows the same rule as the soft G.

Say: Open your Course Books to page 214. Look at #1.

Point to the letter C and ask: What two sounds does this letter make? (Elicit: /k/
or /s/)

Have pupils point to the letter C and say the sounds: The letter is C and the
sounds are /k/ and /s/.
Say: Let's write the letter "c".

Have pupils write the letter "c" to complete the words, then ask: What
words did you write? (Read and elicit: cat, cool, October, nice, December, place,)

Point to each word one at a time and ask: Which sound does the letter C make in this word?
(Elicit /k/ or /s/ depending on the word – say the words together, emphasizing the C sound)

Say: Look at #2.
•
Say: All the words have the letter C. Circle the words where C makes the sound /k/ in green. Circle
the words where C makes the /s/ sound in yellow.

Remind pupils that the letter C makes the soft sound /s/ if it is followed by the vowels E or I.
▪
Give pupils a few minutes to complete the task on their own or with a partner.
Ask to check answers: Which words have the C sound /s/? (Elicit: police, city, pencil, face, juice)

Which words have the C sound /k/? (Elicit: car, cloud, carrots, cow, closet, doctor, clue)
NOTE
•
Weaker pupils should be encouraged to underline the letter "c" in the words with a colored crayon –
if it is followed by "e" or "I" it will make the soft sound /s/.
