Lexical Chunks
Review
•
•
Review the vocabulary using the flashcards and gestures: on, in, near, next to, under.
▪
Ask: Who remembers? (Elicit the words and gestures.)
▪
Have pupils repeat the words and gestures.
Practice the vocabulary by doing a gesture and eliciting the word, then saying a word and eliciting the
gesture.
New
•
Teach the new lexical chunks using the flashcards.
▪
•
•
Present each card one at a time and say the words and/or do a gesture: behind, in front of, to
the right of, to the left of.
Show the flashcard 'behind' and ask: Where is Andy/the boy? (Elicit: He is behind the ball.)
▪
Show 'in front of' and repeat the question. (Elicit: He is in front of the ball.)
▪
Show 'to the right of' and repeat. (Elicit: He is to the right of the ball.)
▪
Show 'to the left of' and repeat. (Elicit: He is to the left of the ball.)
Practice the lexical chunks in the classroom by using classroom items to show relation. For example, a
book in relation to a chair, or a school bag in relation to a pupil. Elicit the sentences using the correct
prepositions for each situation you model.
Course Book
•
Say: Open your Course Books to page 158. Look at #1.
•
Say: Look at the map of the town. What do you see in the town? (Elicit and have
pupils point on the map: houses, school, hospital, police station, clothes store,
library, park, food store, restaurant, streets – Maple Street, Main Street, Pine
Street)
•
Say: Let's read the sentences and mark yes or no according to the map.
▪
Ask different volunteers to read each sentence and decide as a class if the
sentence is true or not.
