Phonics – Vowel Teams: "ow"
•
Say: Now we will learn one more way to make the sound /ow/.
•
Show the flashcards and say: brown, cow, flower, town.

Ask: What sound do you hear in all the words? (Elicit: /ow/)
▪
Point out the vowel team “ow” in each word. “o” and “w” together also make the sound /ow/.

Say: Open your Course Books to page 155. Look at #3.
•
Point to the vowel team “ow” and say: “o” and “w” together make the sound
/ow/.
▪
•
Have pupils point to the vowel team and say the sound: /ow/
Say: Let's write "ow".
▪
Have pupils write the vowel team to complete the words, then say: Let’s
read. (Read the sentences and elicit the “ow” words from the pupils: A white
(elicit: cow) makes white milk. Does a (elicit: brown) cow make chocolate milk?
▪
Ask: Which letters did you write in these words? (Elicit: O and W)
▪
What sound does "ow" make? (Elicit: /ow/)
▪
Read the sentence again and ask pupils what they think. Discuss that all cows make white milk.

Say: Look at #4.
•
Before listening, point to the cow. Ask: What is this? (Elicit: This is a cow.)
•
Say: Let's listen and find out what happened to the cow.
▪
•
Tell pupils to listen and follow along with their finger.
After listening, ask:

What color is the cow in the beginning of the poem? (Elicit: black and white)
▪
What color is the cow at the end of the poem? (Elicit: black, white, and brown)
▪
Why do you think this happened? (Elicit any logical answer (in L1 if needed) regarding the
rain/mud.)

Say: Circle the picture that matches what happened in the poem.
•
Now say: Listen again and circle all the words in the text that have "ou" in blue, circle the words
that have “ow” in brown.
▪
Give pupils a few minutes to do this on their own or with a partner.
▪
Elicit the words to review and check answers. (Elicit: cow, town, down, now, brown /
house, outside, cloud)
