Phonics – Vowel Teams: "oa"

Show the flashcards and say: boat, coat.

Point out the vowel team “oa” in each word. “o” and “a” together make the long sound /O/.
Say the “Talking Vowel Rule” together: When two vowels go walking, the first does the talking!

Point to the vowel team “oa” in one of the words and ask: Which vowel is first? (Elicit: O)
▪
What is its long vowel sound? (Elicit: /O/)

Say: Open your Course Books to page 147. Look at #3.

Point to the vowel team “oa” and say: When two vowels go walking, the first

Have pupils point to the vowel team and say the sound: /O/
Say: Let's write the vowels "oa".
▪
Have pupils write the vowel team to complete the words, then ask: What
words did you write? (Read and elicit: coat, boat)
▪
Ask: Which vowels are these words? (Elicit: “o” and “a”)
▪
What sound does "oa" make? (Elicit: /O/)

Say: Look at #4.
•
Before listening, say: Look at the picture. What do you see? (Elicit: A boy, a boat, water,
grandmother, and a house.)

What is the boy wearing? (Elicit: He is wearing a (rain) coat and yellow boots.)
▪
The boy is wet. Why do you think he is wet? (Elicit any logical response.)
Say: Let's listen and find out why the boy is wet.
▪
Tell pupils to listen and follow along with their finger.

After listening, ask: Why is the boy wet? (Elicit: He sees rain.)
•
Now say: Listen again and circle all the words in the poem that have "ai" in green, circle the words
that have magic E (a_e) in orange, and "oa" in blue.

Give pupils a few minutes to do this on their own or with a partner.
▪
Say: Count how many words of each you find and write the number below.
▪
Ask volunteers to say the words they circled to check answers.
