Say: Open your Course Books to page 146. Look at #1.

Point to the vowel team “ai” and say: When two vowels go walking, the first
does the talking! “a” and “i” together make the long sound /A/.

Have pupils point to the vowel team and say the sound: /A/.
▪
Repeat for the "ay" vowel team.
Say: Let's write the vowels "ai".
▪
Have pupils write the vowel team to complete the words, then ask: What
words did you write? (Read and elicit: hair, train, wait)
▪
Ask: Which vowels are in the middle of these words? (Elicit: “a” and “i")
▪
What sound does "ai" make? (Elicit: /A/)
▪
Repeat with the vowel team "ay". Elicit the words: gray, play, today.

Say: Look at #2.
•
Say: All the words have the long sound /A/. Let's read the words.

The first one is done for the pupils. Say: Look at the first word. Do you see "ai" "ay" or magic E
(a_e)? (Elicit and point to the check: a_e). Point and elicit: table

Have pupils complete the table. Then ask pupils to underline or circle in the word the letters that
make the long /A/ sound.

Challenge strong pupils or a strong class to do the challenge word (#6 "airplane") as well.
•
Ask to check answers: Which words have the long A sound with "ai"? (Elicit: chair, airplane)

Which words have the long A sound with "ay"? (Elicit: gray, birthday)
▪
Which words have the long A sound with Magic E? (Elicit: table, game, airplane)
▪
Show pupils that the challenge word ("airplane") has both the vowel team "ai" and Magic E.
