Phonics – Vowel Teams: "ea"

Tell pupils there is another way to write the long sound /E/.
•
Show the flashcards and say: beach, ears, read, clean, meat, tea.

Point out the vowel team “ea” in each word. “e” and “a” together make the long sound /E/.
▪
Have pupils repeat after you.
Introduce the “Talking Vowel Rule” say: When two vowels go walking, the first does the talking!
▪
Explain to pupils that only the first vowel in a team is heard, and it says its name (long sound).
▪
Point to the vowel team “ea” in one of the words and ask: Which vowel is first? (Elicit: E)
▪
What is its long vowel sound? (Elicit: /E/)
NOTE
•
Say: Some words in English don’t follow this rule. For these words, “e” and “a” together make the
short sound /e/.
▪
Show the flashcards/word cards and elicit: bread, sweater, wear.
▪
Have pupils say the words and emphasize that the vowel team “ea” makes the short /e/ sound.
