Before listening, point to the title and read together with the pupils: A Gift for

logical response (use L1 if needed).)

Point out to the pupils that the text is a dialogue between two boys. Say: Tom
and Jamal are talking about shopping for a gift for their friend Mike.

Say: Let's listen and find out what the boys get for their friend Mike.

Tell pupils to listen and follow along with their finger.

Teach the new vocabulary words “online” and "dollar(s)" through the context of the text (use L1
if needed to explain the meaning).
After listening, ask: Why are the boys shopping? (Elicit: They are shopping for a birthday gift.)

Now, say: Listen again and find and circle all the words in the text that have the Magic E and make
the long I sound.

Give pupils a few minutes to do this on their own or with a partner. Have pupils scan the text for
Magic E Long I words.

Reveal to check answers and practice the vocabulary. Elicit the words: Mike, online, like, white,
size, nine, time.
Challenge a strong class to answer the challenge questions. Discuss as a class: Do you or your parents
like to shop online?
