Have pupils put their head on the desk and say: Goodnight. Go to sleep!

Hide one of the cards and say: Good morning. Wake up!

Ask: What’s missing?

Have pupils say what is missing. Reveal the card to check the answer.

Repeat the game several times and take away a different card each time.

Remind pupils of the Magic E rule. Elicit the rule if possible (use L1 if needed).

Chant “Magic E Rule Chant” (song #2.54).

Show each vowel and review the short and long (letter name) sounds.
Review

Ask: What words do you know that have a Magic E and the long /A/ sound? (Elicit the words and
put them on the board as the pupils say them: bake, game, same, take, share, cake, table, snake,
milkshake, name, late).

What vowel is in the middle of each word? (Elicit: the letter A)
▪
What happens when we have Magic E at the end of the words? (Elicit (in L1 if needed): The
vowel says its name.)

Read the words together with the pupils.

Write the name "Tim" on the board. Elicit the word from the pupils.

Ask: Which letter is the vowel? (Elicit: the letter I).
▪
Ask: What sound does the letter I make? (Elicit: /i/)

Write the letter I in a different color.
Write the letter E in another color at the end of the word. Read the word: time
▪
Ask: What sound does the letter I make now? (Elicit: /I/)
▪
Point out to pupils that the long /I/ sounds just like the letter's name.
Practice the Magic E rule with long I words. Show the flashcards and words: time, five, like, nine,
white. Ask:
