Phonics – Vowel Review
•
•
Write the letters a e i o u on the board. Show pupils that the letters can make a face.
a e
i
▪
Teach the new vocabulary word “face” by drawing one on the board. Show the
how the letters a and e make the eyes, the letter i makes the nose, the letter u
makes the mouth, and the letter o makes the head/face.
▪
Elicit the name of each letter. Explain that these letters are called vowels.
▪
Point and say together with the pupils: The letter is A and the sound is /a/. Elicit some words
that begin with the sound, for example: apple, ask, and, etc.
▪
Repeat for each vowel.
Explain that these letters are special in English because they make more than one sound. (Use L1 if
needed). Say that each vowel has another sound that sounds just like its name. For each vowel,
review the long sound (letter name).
Song
•
Chant “Magic E Rule Chant” (song #2.54).
▪
Show each vowel and review the long sound again (letter name).
Phonics – Magic E: Long A
•
•
•
Write the name "Sam" on the board. Elicit the word from the pupils.
▪
Ask: Which letter is the vowel? (Elicit: the letter A).
▪
Ask: What sound does the letter A make? (Elicit: /a/)
▪
Write the letter A in a different color.
Write the letter E in another color at the end of the word. Read the word: same
▪
Cover the E and elicit the word (Sam). Uncover the E and elicit again (same).
▪
Ask: What sound does the letter A make now? (Elicit: /A/)
▪
Point out to pupils that the long /A/ sounds just like the letter's name.
Ask: What is different between "Sam" and "same"? (Elicit: the letter E at the end)
▪
•
Say (use L1 if needed): When the letter E is added to a word, it changes the vowel sound to say
its name, but we don't hear the E. It is called: Magic E.
Practice the Magic E rule with long A words. Show the flashcards and words: same, share, cake, table,
snake, milkshake, name. Ask:
▪
What vowel is in the middle of each word? (Elicit: the letter A)
