c. Choral and Individual Repetition
Pupils must be active users of the foreign language in order to learn it. Repetition of vocabulary,
lexical chunks and expressions helps pupils internalize the foreign language. Repetition can be choral
or individual. Choral repetition is a motivating way to get pupils to participate actively in the lesson
while reinforcing target vocabulary and language. It builds confidence and allows even timid pupils
to practice using the language without focusing attention on him/herself. Pupils can participate in
chants, songs, and interactive reading chorally, adding movements. Clapping their hands or stamping
their feet adds an additional physical response to the choral reading activity, further involving the
pupils in the language-using experience.
d. Games for Practice and Reinforcement of Vocabulary
Games provide a wonderful opportunity to engage students in using the language for real
communication purposes. They are fun, motivating, and maintain the pupils’ interest while
practicing vocabulary and natural lexical chunks and discourse.
Teachers are encouraged to routinely utilize the game models provided in order to practice new
vocabulary. In addition to reinforcing the new language, the teacher is also provided with games for
reviewing previously taught words. The teacher should play review games with the class periodically
throughout the unit to re-enter language and reactivate vocabulary and lexical chunks that have
been taught in previous units.
Every unit and part in this program incorporates games. The game models in Legendary are designed
to provide teachers with the flexibility to modify the games to suit the target language and the
needs of the class. Many can also be played in pairs, trios, or in group competitions, providing
opportunities for cooperative learning.
A full list of all the game instructions in the program appears in Appendix III.
8. Teaching Reading and Writing
In Legendary, pupils are lead gradually from beginning readers to becoming fluent English readers. The
program is carefully designed to incorporate different areas of reading instruction and a large variety of text
types. Legendary provides the framework for developing strong and fluent readers.
a. Developing Reading Skills
The Legendary program gradually and meticulously develops reading and writing skills from
beginning to fluency. Pupils begin the program by reviewing emergent reading skills they were
taught in Epic (Pre-Foundation A1 level). Learners are eased into the new language by learning more
vocabulary and lexical chunks, contextualized through engaging, thematically appropriate stories.
The pupils acquire a plethora of language, varying in phonological makeup and syllable type. By
creating a strong base of lexical knowledge prior to reading of new texts, these words become part
of the pupils’ repertoire and enable automaticity on their way to becoming fluent readers.
