Phonemic Awareness

Show flashcards and ask:
What sound do you hear at the beginning of the words father/family/frog?
(Elicit: /f/)
Do you have the same sound /f/ in your language?
What sound do you hear at the beginning of the words baby/boy/book? (Elicit:
/b/)
Do you have the same sound /b/ in your language?
What sound do you hear at the beginning of the words sister/swim/six? (Elicit:
/s/)
Do you have the same sound /s/ in your language?
NOTE
Some pupils may confuse the /f/ and /p/ sounds in English. Have the pupils watch
your mouth as you make each sound. Show how you use your teeth and bottom
lip to make the /f/ sound. Show how you use both your lips so make the /p/
sound, and how it is one short sound, unlike /f/ which you can hold continuously.

Teach the new vocabulary using the flashcards.
Present each card one at a time and say the words: door, floor, house, roof,
window.
Have pupils repeat the words.
Have pupils point in the classroom. Say: Point to the door. Point to the window.
How many windows do you see?
Game
•
Go to Sleep (game #4)
Play the game with the vocabulary: door, floor, house, roof, window.
Have pupils put their head on the desk and say: Good night. Go to sleep!
Hide one of the cards and say: Good morning. Wake up!
Ask: What’s missing?
Have pupils say what is missing. Reveal the card to check the answer.
Repeat the game several times and take away a different card each time.
