Use the Course Book page to practice segmenting words into phonemes.

Say: Open your books to page 181.
•
Say: Look at #1. What do you see? (Elicit: I see a bus.)
•
Ask: How many sounds does the word ‘bus’ have? (Elicit: 3)
Say and count to three on your fingers: /b/ /u/ /s/ ‘bus’
Have the pupils copy you by counting on their fingers and saying
the sounds.
Say: Listen to the words. Count the sounds you hear in the words on your fingers.
Color in one circle for every sound.
1. bus 2. on 3. pink 4. baby 5. dog 6. ship 7. five 8. house

Give pupils some time to do this on their own or with a partner.

Reveal to check answers.
•
Say: Look at ‘on’. How many circles did you color? (Elicit: 2)
Together with the pupils say and count to two on your fingers: /o/ /n/ ‘on’
Repeat for all the words.

•
Have pupils "read" the pictures across each row out loud or to a
partner to review the words. Pupils should use their finger to follow
the pictures as they move from left to right.
