Read the story Jamal’s Birthday page by page.
•
Say: Open your books to the story (page 113).
•
Have the pupils do gestures for the emotions and actions of the
characters in the story.
•
Encourage the pupils to repeat the lines in the story after each page.
•
After finishing the story, ask:
How does Jamal feel at the beginning of the story? (Elicit: Jamal feels sad.)
How does Jamal feel at the end of the story? (Elicit: Jamal feels happy.)
Where is Dad at the beginning of the story? (Elicit: on a trip for work)
Where is Dad at the end of the story? (Elicit: at home)
Do you have cake/balloons/posters/gifts on your birthday?

Ask several pupils. Elicit: Yes, I have (cake) on my birthday.

Sing “Happy Birthday” (song #1.52) to Jamal.

Say: Open your books to page 104.
•
Say: Number the pictures in the order they happen in the story.
•
Call on a pupil to the board to choose the picture that happens first
in the story.
Have the pupil use relevant vocabulary to describe the scene
depicted in the picture.
Then call another pupil until all the pictures are in the correct sequence.
Elicit the following (or any other logical response) for each picture:
