Do you have the same sound /g/ in your language?
What sound do you hear at the end of the words bicycle/candle/beautiful?
(Elicit: /l/)
What sound do you hear at the end of the words airplane/train/green? (Elicit:
/n/)
Show 'train' flashcard and ask: How many parts does the word ‘train’ have? (Elicit: 1)
Say and clap 1 time: /train/
Have pupils copy you by clapping and saying the syllable.
Show 'airplane' flashcard and ask: How many parts does the word ‘airplane’ have?
(Elicit: 2)
Say and clap 2 times: /air/ /plane/ ‘airplane’
Have pupils copy you by clapping and saying the syllables.
Show flashcard for ‘mom’ and ask: Who is this? (Elicit: This is Mom.)
Ask one group or row of pupils: What sound do you hear at the beginning of the
word ‘mom’? (Elicit: /m/)
Ask another group or row of pupils: What sound do you hear at the end of the
word ‘mom’? (Elicit: /m/)
Ask a third group or row of pupils: What sound do you hear in the middle of the
word ‘mom’? (Elicit: /o/)
Ask: How many sounds does the word ‘mom’ have? (Elicit: 3)
Have each group or row repeat the sound you elicited above in the order you
hear them in the word.
Repeat all together and count to three on your fingers: /m/ /o/ /m/ ‘mom’
Have the pupils copy you by counting on their fingers and saying the sounds.
Ask: What other words do you know that have the sound /m/? (Elicit: mother,
family, room, etc.)
Do you hear the sound in the beginning, middle, or end of the word?
