What sound do you hear at the end of the word ‘hat’? (Elicit: /t/)
What sound do you hear in the middle of the word ‘hat’? (Elicit: /a/)
Ask: How many sounds does the word ‘hat’ have? (Elicit: 3)
Say and count to three on your fingers: /h/ /a/ /t/ ‘hat’
Have the pupils copy you by counting on their fingers and saying the sounds.
Ask: What happens if I take away /h/ and say /k/?
Say together with the pupils: /k/ /at/ ‘cat’
Tell pupils that ‘cat’ and ‘hat’ are rhyming words because they have the same
ending sound /at/ (use L1 when needed).
Ask: What happens if I take away /t/ and say /n/?
Say together with the pupils: /ka/ /n/ ‘can’
Remind the lexical chunk by saying: I can (jump).
Say: Look at the blue box. What do you see? (Elicit: I see a tree.)
Ask: What sound do you hear at the beginning of the word ‘tree’? (Elicit: /t/)
Repeat for the yellow box (world /w/).

Say: Put the stickers from sticker page 5 in the correct box where the beginning
sound matches the picture you see.

Give pupils a few minutes to do this on their own or with a partner.

Reveal to check answers.
