Teach the new vocabulary using the flashcards.
Explain in English that mother and father have two more names that mean the
same but are more casual (use L1 when needed).
Present each card one at a time and say: Father is ‘dad’, Mother is ‘mom’.
Have pupils repeat the words.
Game

Disappearing Card (game #20)
Play the game with the words: dad, mom, brother, sister, baby.
Have pupils say all the words.
Hide one card. Tell the class to repeat all the words again, including the picture
you have hidden.
Hide another card and again have the pupils repeat all the pictures, including the
hidden ones.
If they do not remember the cards, reveal the card(s) and try again.
Do this until all the flashcards are hidden. Tell the class to say the names of all the
pictures from memory.
Reveal the pictures again as the pupils say them one by one.

Say: Open your books to page 91.

Say: Look at the red box. Who do you see? (Elicit: I see dad.)

Ask:

‘dad’? (Elicit: /d/)

What sound do you hear in the middle of the word ‘dad’? (Elicit: /a/)
Ask: How many sounds does the word ‘dad’ have? (Elicit: 3)

Say and count to three on your fingers: /d/ /a/ /d/ ‘dad’

Have the pupils copy you by counting on their fingers and saying the sounds.
Say: Look at the green box. What do you see? (Elicit: I see a hat.)
Ask: What sound do you hear at the beginning of the word ‘hat’? (Elicit: /h/)
