Play CD Track 31 so that pupils can hear the story and follow it in their books.
Ask for three volunteers to read the text aloud, acting out the roles of Amir, Henry and
Lucy.
Tell pupils to complete the sentences individually, using the information in the text. (a.
dates, figs, nuts and jam b. flute, drum)
Invite pupils to come to the board to write the full sentences. Discuss the answers, allowing
pupils to correct their work.
Discuss the tradition of giving gifts. Ask pupils to share their experiences of giving gifts or
being given gifts. Ask pupils why they think Amir gave Henry and Lucy gifts. (So that they
would not forget him; So that they would remember the desert adventure; To thank them
for their help.) Ask them why Henry and Lucy gave Amir a gift. (They wanted to help make
the birthday party even more successful; They were invited to stay, and so wanted to give
a gift.)
