Write on the board: His family and friends gave him gifts.
Ask pupils to scan the text to find out what gifts he received. Write pupils' responses on
the board. (books, a funny hat, a TV)
Ask: Was the old man happy now? (no)
Ask: What did the old man want? (to travel and see places in the world)
Ask: Why could he not travel? (He was old and sick.)
What gift made him happy? (the magic mirror)
Why? (because he could see places in the world; because his grandson made him
a gift of love with his own hands)
Have pupils underline the sentences that show why the mirror made the old man happy.
(He saw many places in the world. You made me a gift of love.)
Have pupils think of times when they made a gift for someone instead of buying it.
Discuss the advantages of making a gift with your own hands.
Have pupils predict how Amir will react to this story. Tell pupils to read what Amir, Henry
and Lucy say after hearing the story. Elicit that they are going to make a magic mirror for
Amir’s mother. Elicit why this is a good idea. (She also wants to see places in the world.)
Discuss how people today can see places in the world without actually travelling.
