Have pupils read what the genie says. Ask: How do you think a story can help Amir?
Write the following words on the board and tell pupils that the words are in the story: sick,
travel, grandson, mirror. Explain the meaning of the words. Elicit what the story could be
about.
Tell pupils to read the first two lines of the text in order to answer: What words tell us that
the story happened long ago? (Once upon a time) Explain that this is usually the way a
folktale or fairy tale begins. Ask: Who is the story about? (a man) and write the answer on
the board.
Have pupils find three words that describe the man. (old, sick, sad)
Tell pupils to read the last four words of the text. Ask: What do you think happened that
made the man happy?
Teach the words: gave, made a gift, mirror, travel, places in the world, saw. (See
introduction: Teaching New Words and Lexical Chunks) Note: Pupils are exposed to the
past tense verbs as vocabulary items and not as a grammar focus.
Ask pupils if they now have more information which can help them predict what made the
old man happy.
Read the story aloud to the class or play CD Track 28.
