Write pupils names in the appropriate column. Repeat for the other categories.
Use the completed table as a survey. Ask: How many pupils want something connected to
sports? music? clothes? other things?
6. Read and Say
• Have pupils read the text silently, circling all of the words in which the -ar pattern appears.
(carpet, stars, market, jars, farm, cars)
Draw a table of two columns on the board. Write the word cat in one column and car in the
other. Read the words with the class to emphasize the differences in sound. Note that the
letter a makes a different sound when it is followed by the letter r than when it is followed
by other letters.
Invite a pupil to come to the board. Say one of the following words and have the pupil write
the word in the correct column: hat, bat, mat, sat, rat; far, star, arm, dark, park, mark.
Repeat the activity with other pupils.
Read the chant together.

7. Sing a Song
• Play CD Track 26.
• Play the track once more, and have pupils underline three rhyming words (fly, high, sky)
and write them on the board.
Ask: Which letters are not heard in the word high?
Ask: Do you know more words that rhyme with high, sky or fly? (my, cry, why)
Sing the song with the whole class.
