•
Ask pupils if they are familiar with the story of Aladdin and the Magic Lamp.
•
Ask: Are Aladdin and his mother poor or rich? Write the word poor on the board. Elicit
its meanings and that the opposite is rich. Refer pupils to statement # 1.
•
Write the word find on the board. Elicit the meaning in L1. Refer pupils to statement 5.
•
Read aloud each of the statements and have pupils raise their hands when they think
the statement is true. Have pupils mark the statement as true or false independently.
Explain to the pupils that they will not know for sure which statements are true and
which false until after they have read the story.
Ask the following guiding questions and have pupils read the first paragraph of the

story silently to find the answers:

Who are the characters? (Aladdin, his mother, a bad man)
o
What is the problem? (They are poor.)
o
What does Aladdin want to do to help his mother? (He wants to work, to get money,
to buy food.)

Play the first paragraph on CD Track 96 .
•
Ask the following guiding questions and have pupils read the second paragraph of the
story silently to find the answers:
o
Where does the bad man want Aladdin to go? (to a cave)
o
What does the bad man want Aladdin to find? (the lamp)
