asking as few yes/no questions as possible. Pupils then change roles.

Write the word surprise on the board and explain it in L1. Share your personal
experience of a surprise. Have pupils share their experiences of surprises. Elicit if
surprises are always fun.
Write the phrase have fun on the board, and explain its meaning in L1. Ask pupils to
say what having fun means for them. Allow L1 as necessary.
Have pupils scan the letter and underline the word surprise. (It appears twice.)
Read the text and have pupils follow the text in their books.
Ask the following questions and have pupils read the text silently to find the answers:
Who wrote this letter? (Princess Meg)
What does she want to give Henry and Lucy? (another gift)
What do Henry and Lucy have in the bag? (some more stardust)
What does Princess Meg tell Henry and Lucy to do? (use the stardust, close your
eyes, have fun!)
Ask pupils to predict the surprise.

a. Have pupils look at the pictures in the comic strip and elicit that Henry and Lucy are
at an amusement park and that they are looking at themselves in a magic mirror that
makes them look funny.
