Elicit what pupils know about pirates and write their suggestions on the board.
Draw a pirate flag on the board. Put the word and picture card of flag on the board.
Explain that pirate ships fly flags that are made by their captains.
Tell pupils to scan the facts about pirates and circle the words travel, eat, flag and
name.
Read the facts, one at a time, and make sure that pupils understand them.
Read the questions with pupils, one question at a time. Have pupils find the answers
and tell you which circled word helped them find the answer. (a. dried meat, cookies,
eggs and fish b. a Jolly Roger c. Blackbeard)
Check pupils' work by asking individual pupils to read the answers to the questions
aloud.
Compare the facts they learned with the facts that they had suggested and that were
written on the board.

Write the word Blackbeard on the board. Explain that Blackbeard is the name of a
famous pirate. Explain the meaning of beard in L1, and by pointing out the black beard
he has and from which his name was given.
Put the word and picture cards for belt, sword and gun on the board. Read the words
with pupils, explaining their meanings in L1 and have pupils point them out in the
pictures in their books.

Blackbeard - A Famous Pirate
Blackbeard was a famous pirate.
Blackbeard's real name was
Edward Teach. He was born in
England in 1680. He had a pirate
ship. It was big and fast.
People were afraid of
Blackbeard. Blackbeard’s
clothes were all black and he had
a long, black beard. Blackbeard
had a belt. Blackbeard’s belt had
many guns and swords on it. He
always wore a black hat with
three corners*.
