Have a pupil read aloud the title of the story. Explain the meaning of treetops by
pointing them out in the picture. Explain that treetops is made up of two words tree and
tops. Ask pupils to suggest why they think monkeys live in treetops.
Explain that this is another fable similar to The Lion and the Mouse.
Play CD Track 73 as pupils follow in their books. Instruct them to underline the word
trouble every time it appears in the story. (11) Explain the meaning of trouble in L1.
In order to encourage reading silently, it is suggested to ask leading questions before
reading each paragraph:
1. Who is the character? What does she make?
2. What does the woman drop? What does she say?
3. Who hears the woman? What does he do? What does he
say about the cakes?
4. What does the monkey ask for in the market? What does
the man give him?
5. What is in the bag? What does the monkey do?
6. What does the monkey decide?
In order to ensure that pupils understand the humor in the monkey’s mistake, ask:
What did the woman mean when she used the word trouble? (She referred to the
mess when she fell and the cakes were everywhere.) What did the monkey think
trouble was? (the cakes)
Have pupils choose a sentence from the text that matches the illustrations.
