Have pupils scan the text and elicit the ways of travel that Sara mentions. Write on the
board:
ride on a horse
travel in a jeep
fly in a hot air balloon
fly in an airplane
ride on an elephant
Circle the articles a and an in each phrase. Remind pupils that an is used before the
words elephant and airplane because it is easier to pronounce (See Language Focus Unit
1 Lesson 1).
Explain the characteristics of a savanna: a savanna is sometimes wet and sometimes
dry. Write the words sometimes, wet and dry on the board and explain their meanings.
Explain that the savanna, unlike the jungle has some trees and lots of grass. Write the
word grass on the board and elicit its meaning in L1. Mention the importance of the rainy
wet season for the animals and people that live in the savanna. The people and animals
move from place to place depending on where food, grass and water are available.
Have pupils complete the sentences about Sara's favorite place, favorite animal and
favorite way to travel. (1. Africa 2. elephant 3. an elephant's back)
