Talk Together
Point out the Language Focus box. Explain the use of the helping verb do in asking
yes/no questions in the Present Simple. E.g. I like apples – do you like apples – yes
I do – no, I don’t. Compare the way pupils ask questions about actions in L1. Elicit
the differences between English and L1. Ask questions in the Present Simple. E.g.
Do you live in the city? Do you want a… Do you run… Do you play football… Do you
like the computer… etc. Explain in the short answer forms we do not have to add the
verb. Instead of answering Yes, I live in the city, you use the short form Yes, I do or
No, I don’t.
Show pupils a few types of magazines that you have prepared and brought with
you to class. Hold up a travel magazine and ask: Do you like travel magazines?
Encourage pupils to respond using: Yes, I do/No, I don’t. Elicit the names of the travel
magazines in L1.
Display the magazines and write the types on the board. E.g. Sports, Travel, Music.
Have pupils sit in pairs and ask each other Do you like X magazines? Encourage
them to respond using the structures: Yes, I do/No, I don’t.
Sum up the Talk Together activity:
o Draw a table on the board that represents the types of magazines pupils
might read, as shown here.
o Have pupils raise their hands when you ask what kind of magazine the
pupils like. Record the responses in the table.
o Based on the table elicit what interests many pupils have in common and
which topics are of special interest only to one or two pupils in the class.
