Put the word card of magazine on the board. Elicit the difference between a magazine
and a newspaper. Show pupils the magazines that you have prepared and brought to
class. Tell them that magazines sometimes focus on a specific theme.
Show them a few magazines and ask what kind of magazine each is. Elicit that one
is a travel magazine. Place the word card travel on the board and elicit its meaning
in L1.
Discuss the three magazine covers and their titles. Elicit what kind of articles can be
found in each magazine.
Write the question words Who, What, Where on the board.
Explain that newspaper headlines are always very short, yet provide a lot of
information. Explain that this is done to capture the attention of the readers so that
they will read the article that follows the headlines.
Have pupils read the newspaper headline in order to answer the question words on
the board.
Have a pupil come to the board and write the answers to the three wh- questions
about the headline. (Who - reporter; What - lost; Where - safari)
Tell pupils to scan the text for the name of the reporter. (Sara)
Based on the headline, have pupils choose the magazine that Sara writes for (See
exercise 2 - The World of Travel). Have pupils justify their choice. (She could write for
either The World of Travel or Camera for You.)
Tell pupils to read the article and learn more about Sara: where she is (in Africa, on
a safari), what she does (travels and takes picture with her camera), what kind of
pictures she takes (pictures of people, beautiful places and interesting animals).
Place the word and picture card of camera on the board. Have pupils repeat it and
ensure that they understand its meaning. Ask what people do with a camera and
write the words take a picture on the board. Say that people usually take pictures
of people or interesting things. Place the word card interesting on the board. Have
pupils repeat it and ensure that pupils understand its meaning.
Write the sentence on the board: Sara travels and _________ of _________ animals
and places with her________. Ask a pupil to come to the board and place the right
word cards in the correct place. (takes pictures, interesting, camera)
